Caretaking, Housesitting, and the Freewheeling Lifestyle

Our new issue has just gone to press so I have some time now to catch up on my email. I have received several emails in the past few weeks from RVers who have decided to combine their love of traveling with property caretaking and housesitting. They are on the road this summer, caretaking and housesitting, both in and out of their RVs. We have always had many subscribers who are full-time RVers and, over the years, they have shared their experiences of how they were able to combine property caretaking with their freewheeling lifestyle.

Leslie, a single woman in her sixties, writes, “I have several great property caretaking experiences under my belt.” Traveling in the U.S. in her RV, Leslie is in demand as a caretaker because all she requires are utility and water hookups. In exchange for looking after the property, she has “the luxury of living in the familiar comfort of my own RV in some of the most beautiful settings you can imagine.”

Two of our subscribers, Kurt and Aileen, full-time RVers, have emailed to let me know that they are caretaking a private home in Canada for the summer. They have their RV parked in a private spot on the property and are enjoying what they call, “our off the road vacation.” They write, “We sold our own home several years ago and purchased an RV. We’ve traveled through the U.S., Canada, and down into Mexico. We love the lifestyle but sometimes it is nice to take a little break from RV parks and life on the road and spend time in a real house. Property caretaking allows us to do that.”

Barry writes of a completely different experience: “I accepted a position advertised in the Gazette for a caretaker at a campground in Australia. I was provided room and board in exchange for doing some work around the campground. I was able to complete my duties and responsibilities in a few hours and that gave me time to explore the surrounding area. It was like a paid vacation. I am really looking forward to doing something like this again, maybe in New Zealand, next year."
