Caretakers and caretaking outside of the U.S.

I had a good email and telephone call exchange with two of our new subscribers this week. Matt and Shelly are close to retirement, live here in the U.S., and have recently purchased a second home in Panama that they will use for vacations. They described the home as a "somewhat isolated beach front property in an area that is just beginning to be discovered and built up by expats, primarily from the U.S. and Canada." They originally envisioned the house as something they could "lock and leave" when they are back in the U.S. but now think that having a caretaker on site to housesit and look after the property is probably a good idea. In one of their emails, Matt and Shelly asked me if I thought that anyone would ever be interested in caretaking their house which they describe as being in a beautiful setting but in an area that is well off the beaten track and still not developed. The Caretaker Gazette actually has quite a few subscribers who are adventurous and interested in becoming caretakers or housesitters in locations outside of the U.S. In an article published by escapeartist.com we share the story of two subscribers who are doing just that: http://www.escapeartist.com/efam/77/Overseas_Caretakers.html We have quite a few subscribers with a spirit of adventure who are willing to take on the challenges of caretaking overseas and, as the number of Americans purchasing properties overseas increases, there will be opportunities for both.

  1. Wow! A lot of good information here. I am really inspired to give overseas caretaking a try. I hadn't thought of it before but even though there are a lot of us who want to caretake overseas, there are probably just as many property owners looking for people like me to caretaker their homes overseas.

  2. Thanks for sharing this good info with all of us. I am also an American who owns a home outside of the U.S. Mine is in Ecuador. I am nowhere near retirement so I'm not quite ready to live there full time, just on my vacations, so I will be using your publication to run an ad for a caretaker.

  3. Just discovered your blog. Loved the article about the overseas caretakers. We have a question for you. How do the property owners hire people who are so far away? Can you give us a little bit of information about how the process works? We want to give this a try. Thanks. Marilyn and Rob

  4. Hi Marilyn and Rob, thanks for writing. Most overseas property owners first ask a housesitter/property caretaker for references. Those references don't have to be from property owners you have housesat for - your references could be any kind of non-related professionals who could put in a good word about you and vouch for you when a property owner contacts them. Then if your references check out, there is usually a phone interview. Then if the phone interview goes well, many overseas property owners will email photos of their home to you, and they might ask you to email recent photos of yourself - just to make sure you are in good health. Then after that - get your affairs in order, and get your plane tickets!
