I had an email exchange with one of our subscribers, Mark, who responded to an ad in The Caretaker Gazette and was hired as a caretaker on a large estate property:
Mark: Although the estate has been here on the Cape for nearly 100 years, the new owners had recently purchased the home, guest houses, barns, and acreage. I would be the first full-time caretaker hired by these property owners for their estate. Because the property owners did not have any prior experience with caretakers, they did not have any guidelines on which to base my salary and compensation.

Gary: We have a caretaker survey, which includes salary information, on our website. You are welcome give this information to the property owners so both of you can review it when you discuss salary and other compensation. I later received this email response from Mark:
Mark: Thanks for the information. Using the caretaker survey on your website, the property owners and I were able to agree on what would be a reasonable salary and compensation for the duties and responsibilities I have on the estate on the Cape. Your information is useful for defining a standard for this profession. The property owners and I will review your survey again when it is time for my one year performance review, and if we are both happy with the arrangement, I will be prepared to ask for a salary increase. Thanks for the access to this information in your survey.
Gary: I’m happy to help out and glad that you and the property owners were able to the information on our caretaker survey it to work out a compensation package that is agreeable to both of you.
